Alex Ross is an artist who has worked extensively on superhero comics.
Ross is Chris Metzen's favorite artist, and through Blizzard's Fine Arts Program, reached out to Ross. Looking at the company's various IPs, Metzen felt that StarCraft, and specifically Jim Raynor, would be Ross's best fit. Ross did a few concept passes, including Raynor sitting on his vulture, before creating a piece of art that Metzen felt encapsulated Raynor's character perfectly.
Ross later left Blizzard. The artwork, which hung at Blizzard's offices, was later purchased by Kat Hunter and gifted to Metzen as a Christmas gift. It is currently hanging inside Metzen's home.[1]
