In Patch 4.3, Blizzard introduced Premium Maps, allowing community mapmakers to sell their maps for a price.[1]

Development[]
Main article: Arcade/development The Arcade is a replacement for the Marketplace concept.[2] On May 12, 2012, the arcade became available for alpha testing for a select number of invitees.[3] It became available to players in general in June 2012.[4]
Participating in the Rate the Game contest, which involved playing and rating a custom game, gave a chance to access the StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm beta. Blizzard randomly chose 250 eligible contestants for a beta key.[5] After that the same month, Blizzard would make a second Rate a Game contest for 500 more beta keys.[6]
It was stated in 2015 that developers would be allowed to sell Arcade maps at a cost at a future date.[7] No content that was previously free would be commercialized.[8]
Notes[]
According to a poll conducted by Blizzard, 5% of StarCraft II players' primary interest in the game is in Arcade (as of January, 2017).[9]
