In StarCraft II, units are tagged with one or more Attributes that determine bonus damage, affect targeting, and/or can influence spells and abilities; as opposed to in StarCraft, where damage may be reduced depending on what unit type is being damaged.[1] Damage is added on a "per hit" basis, and bonuses are calculated before armor is subtracted.[2]
Attack types are more varied than in StarCraft, and can gain bonuses towards light, armored, biological, and massive units.[3] Most units are either light or armored, which roughly corresponds to non-large and large unit sizes of StarCraft, respectively. Buildings are treated as armored[3] and have the "structure" property.[4] Some units, such as Archons, are neither light nor armored.[1]
Shields are subject to the bonus damage of the unit underneath them.[5]
Overview[]
There are restrictions on which Attribute combinations are valid.
- Common
Units have Attributes from the following 4 categories:
- Units are either ground or air.
- Units are either melee, ranged, or have no attack.
- Units are either light or armored.
- Units are either biological or mechanical.
- Archons are neither biological nor mechanical.
- SCVs and Hellbats are both biological and mechanical.
- Special
Units can then have two additional attributes from the following:
In Campaigns, some units are marked by a Heroic attribute. This attribute indicates that the unit is resistant to "control effects" such as a Marauder's Concussive Shells.
Tables[]
Type | Armor | Attack | Movement |
---|---|---|---|
Biological, Mechanical | Armored, Light | Melee, Ranged | Air, Ground |
Special |

Detector, Heroic, Massive, Psionic, Structure, Summoned |
Development[]
Biological was originally called "fleshy," light was called "light armor," armored was called "heavy armor," and massive was called "giant."
"Hover" and "Robotic" appear in the Galaxy Map Editor for StarCraft II, but apply to no units in standard Versus games. In Co-op Missions, enemies with the "Robotic" attribute can be taken control of with the Reclamation ability of Energizers, but not by the hero unit Karax ability in the Legacy of the Void campaign or the "Heroes from the Storm" mutation.
