DS Brin is an experimental Kurzweil-class science vessel that was to house Project Blackstone after Valerian Mengsk moved it from its original location. Valerian had personally designed the vessel over the course of several years. Dr. Talen Ayers thought it had gleaming, hygienic corridors.
After the rescue of the scientists of Project Blackstone, Emperor Valerian Mengsk gave the crew an offer to work for him in researching the xel'naga. The Brin would be refitted as a long-term exploration vessel and given to the team, and Talen Ayres would be put in command of the expedition.
