Zerg-infested Char Aleph

Char Aleph is a space platform in near orbit over Char. It is a series of clustered tethered platforms kept in geosynchronous orbit, maintained by a series of coolant towers. The platforms themselves are durable enough to survive nuclear detonations.[1]

History[]

The platform was built by Riksville Mining Operations alongside the Terran Confederacy[2] to house the few maintenance teams for automated mining sites on Char after the Guild Wars. During the Great War, it was infested by the zerg and used as an orbital nesting site and hatchery.[3]

During the Brood War, Sarah Kerrigan made the platform her base of operations[4], bringing Matriarch Raszagal there to use as leverage to get Dark Prelate Zeratul to kill the Overmind for her.[5] However, Zeratul circumvented Kerrigan's defenses and rescued Raszagal just as Samir Duran finished relocating Kerrigan's primary hive clusters to the platform.[6]

A Terran Dominion fleet under Emperor Arcturus Mengsk, a protoss armada under Praetor Artanis and the remainder of the United Earth Directorate's expeditionary fleet under Admiral Gerard DuGalle converged on the platform but were all defeated by Kerrigan's forces.[7]

During the Battle of Char in the Second Great War, the platform served as the orbital nest for 80% of flying zerg strains.[1]

During the battle, General Horace Warfield convinced Commander Jim Raynor to launch an assault on the platform to end the zerg's air superiority before their primary assault on Kerrigan's hive. As the platforms themselves could not be dismantled, Raynor targeted the four coolant towers to overheat each tethered section of the platform. The zerg attempted to stop the assault by sending a leviathan, but the Dominion was able to overcome the defenders, and destroy the platform.[1]

After Kerrigan's defeat, Warfield was able to use the air superiority gained from the platform's destruction as an advantage against Broodmother Zagara.[8]

Char Aleph

  • Aleph is the reconstructed name of the first letter of the Proto-Canaanite alphabet, and ancestor of the vowel A.
  • The space platform appears as a contestable territory in RISK: StarCraft.[9]

The only way I had of assuring your cooperation was to take away that which you value most. However, I give you my word that once you've killed the Overmind, I'll allow her to return to you."

Raszagal: "I do not ask this for myself. Nor do I ask it on Kerrigan's behalf. I ask you to do this for our people, Zeratul. Obey me as you always have... Trust in my judgement."
Zeratul: "Very well, Matriarch. The Overmind will die this day."
