"Only the finest officers are chosen to serve aboard the pride of the Confederate fleet-- do you have what it takes?"

- Colonial Fleet advertisement for the Behemoth-class battlecruiser(src)

The Colonial Fleet was a branch of the Terran Confederacy Armed Forces. Its theoretical guiding principles were "strength, pride and discipline."[1] Those in the Confederate Marine Corps could transfer to the fleet through training courses available at various academies.[2]

The Colonial Fleet provided air support in terrestrial operations[2] and it appears that the Confederate Air Force was merged into the Fleet at some point, air bases being maintained on worlds such as Tarsonis. Elements of Air Force rank structure also found their way into the fleet. The Fleet's main base was located among the three space platforms orbiting Tarsonis, which also served as a staging point for ships assigned in other systems and a supply base.[3]

Joining the Colonial Fleet required an exam and the physical, but the latter was considered easy to pass.[4]

It is possible that Sector Patrol was part of the Fleet.

History

Elements of the Fleet were present at Chau Sara when the protoss arrived.[5] After the destruction of Chau Sara and a clumsy Confederate counterattack in Mar Sara, the protoss fleet withdrew, despite their superiority. Upon the time Mar Sara was overrun by the zerg, the Fleet had mostly withdrawn from the planet as majority of the Confederate forces were successfully evacuated and after that, the protoss arrived again, destroying all life in Mar Sara.[6][7]

The Fleet and the Confederate Army were dispatched in massive numbers to Antiga Prime to deal with the rebellion and the Sons of Korhal which also took Alpha Squadron in its ranks. They were unable to suppress the revolt due in part to the zerg and once the protoss sterilized the world Confederate forces were forced to Halcyon.[3] Any ships which remained were destroyed by the zerg lured in by a psi emitter.[7]

Most of the fleet were present during the Sons of Korhal and, later, zerg invasion of Tarsonis. During the battle for Tarsonis City one of the fleet's battlecruisers was heavily damaged and crashed into the western parts of the city causing fires and mass panic. Ships continued to mutiny and defect to the rebels as the end drew closer while some chose to escape on their own ways. Others also took part in the battle, evacuating soldiers and civilians alike.[7] After the  fall of the Confederacy, parts of the fleet were absorbed into the new Dominion Armada.[8]
