Creep colonies are zerg structures used to extend creep. Colonies have to be established on pre-existing creep.
Creep colonies helped extend the creep that was initially generated by a hatchery. Creep is similar to blood vessels in the sense that it is needed for Zerg buildings to grow. When a hatchery or creep colony (and variations) are built, they slowly generate creep around themselves, eventually stopping when a certain radius is reached. If the source of creep around a building is destroyed, the building will still retain a minuscule amount of creep under it and will continue to live. Larvae are completely dependent on the creep for life and will die shortly if removed from it.

Creep colonies also have the ability to evolve into a sunken colony (for repelling ground invasion) or into a spore colony (for detection and repelling aerial assaults). Thus the creep colony is not only necessary to expand the life-giving creep but also for mutating into defense.

Creep colonies are zerg structures used to extend creep. Colonies have to be established on pre-existing creep.

A creep colony can evolve into defensive structures: the sunken colony for ground defense, or the spore colony for air defense and detection.[1]

Development

The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft which is no longer valid.

In some builds of the StarCraft beta, the name "spore colony" was used for the creep colony's sprite.[2]

The creep colony's sprite previously had the placeholder name "Fcolony,"[3] possibly referring to the fungal colony.

StarCraft II

The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft II which is no longer valid.
CreepColony SC2 DevGame1

The creep colony in StarCraft II

At some point, creep colonies were present in the game engine of StarCraft II.[4]

However, the creep colony was replaced by the creep tumor, and the defenses with the spine crawler and the spore crawler respectively.
