The defiler mound[1] is a zerg structure which provides the genetic template for the larvae to morph into defilers. The mound itself is a pool of cancerous soup strewn with a tangled mess of twisted biological rejects. The mound is so poisonous that mineral chunks around a mound are tainted with the essence of the defiler itself.

Game Structure

The defiler genetic code can also undergo evolution here to provide the defiler with abilities like Plague, Consume, and Metasynaptic Nodes (more energy).

Researched Abilities

Plague Icon SC1
Plague

Sprays all units and buildings in a 3 x 3 target area with spores that inflicts maximum of 296.25 damage over 25 seconds. (Deals 3.95 damage in 8-frames intervals, resulting in 75 damage instances over 600 frames.)

Plague will not kill or destroy affected units and buildings, and will not keep damaging unit has four or less health, leaving it at least 1 hit point. This does not end Plague; it continues to check if the unit has greater than 4 health for the duration, and deals 3.95 damage when it does.

Plague does not drain shields but will affect the hit points underneath regardless of shield strength. Affected cloaked units will be revealed.

Consume Icon SC1
Consume

Kills a "friendly" zerg unit while giving the consuming defiler 50 energy points. The amount of energy gained is the same regardless of the unit 'consumed'. Therefore a cheap unit, such as a zergling, or one that is about to die, is considered the best "food".

Development

The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft which is no longer valid.

An earlier version of the defiler mound's sprite was named "mutation pit."[2][3]

The defiler mound shares the same wireframe with the mutation chamber.
