History

HunCraft is a detailed expansion made for StarCraft: Brood War, by Huncraft Interactive, released in August of 2001. It has 3 new campaign episodes (one for each race) with 26 missions and a hidden mission (in the Zerg episode), 3 new units (one per race), new heroes with new portraits, new special buildings in the campaign, new music tracks, 2 new cinematic scenes, more than 40 custom maps and some other minor changes. It is in Hungarian but most of the hotkeys are the same as in the English version. The original name of the project was StarCraft: Genocide, but the Hungarian version was retitled to HunCraft, and since no English version was ever released, the game is known as HunCraft.

Blizzard's publisher, Vivendi Universal, did not allow the game to be published as an official expansion set, due to the low number of Hungarian customers, so it was released as a free game. It was not particularly popular, as many Hungarian StarCraft fans did not know about it, due to the lack of advertisements. According to HunCraft Interactive the making of the game was very difficult, due to issues with some of their contacts. source

Though most unofficial expansion sets could only be used in custom maps, HunCraft has its own .exe file and a totally new environment (a new load screen and new episode characters) with new map file extensions (hcx). After installation, the original StarCraft can be played without any changes, because HunCraft has separate files from Brood War, but HunCraft must be placed in the same directory. HunCraft supports any patch until 1.09 patch, but works equally well with subsequent patches.

Story

It begins shortly after Admiral Gerard DuGalle committed suicide.

Episode VII: Zerg

Infected Kerrigan has to finish the job the Zerg were programmed to do, eliminate all Protoss. The story starts with the Zerg eliminating massive forces of the United Earth Directorate on Char. The UED needs Generators to power up their buildings on Char. Kerrigan and Cerebrate Gzorn devise a plan to shut the Generators off by infiltrating an underground base and stealing some Data Discs. An encrypted transmission makes Kerrigan think Mengsk is on Char. The power off was done by Drones who planted the Discs on Generator Beacons. After they eliminate most of the UED army on a space platform with the help of Arcturus Mengsk, she orders him to be killed while coming towards her in his Battlecruiser. A last mass of a UED fleet led by Hudson Rheims blocks her space path for only a short while until she deals with them. As she has her revenge on Terran, Kerrigan can now fully concentrate on the Protoss and travels along with Gzorn to Aiur. Sarah gets through a Warp Gate on Aiur after Zeratul enters first and sets a self-destruct timer for the Gate. Protoss High Templar Fenidus, with his troops, tricks Gzorn on Aiur fooling him he is a traitor that hates the new Council and steals a Khaydaryn Crystal, needed to destroy the Darkeners whom protect yet another Warp Gate. Fenidus escapes through the Warp gate and Gzorn is killed by the ancient Archons and protectors of Warp Gates while you the commander do not help him being under Kerrigan's influence who came through the now unprotected Warp Gate. She then brings some troops and destroys the Ancient ones, who both die if one of them dies because of the linked energies, with the help of the Crystal. Afterwards she enters the Warp Gate again to Shakuras and goes to destroy the Xel'Naga Temple which was the main cause of Zerg eradication on Shakuras during Brood War. She arrives at the Xel'Naga temple which is being teleported under her eyes by the Protoss elsewhere on Shakuras. Meanwhile the Protoss destroy the Gate she came through but there is another in the area. It does not take long to find the Temple again. After the gets out the new Warp Gate, Kerrigan and her lackeys destroy it. In this place Sarah finds a true Protoss traitor Mojo who helps her against the other Protoss and destroying the Temple. After its destruction Zeratul appears only to be murdered by Duran who after kills Kerrigan too making him the ultimate Swarm leader. Mojo was nowhere to be found.

Episode VIII: Protoss

Executor Artanis sends you with some Protoss troops to liberate Shakuras' Executor Citadel site, New Antioch from Zerg infection. It is the first time a Protoss (Artanis) exclaimed "En Taro Zeratul". The Protoss find High Templar Fenidus and Zealot Mojo in the settlement to the south and head towards a Warp Gate to the north-east. The Gate is damaged so they have no other choice but to await reinforcements. Meanwhile Artanis, Fenidus (both as High Templars) and their troops defend the city. Mojo says he wants and goes to defend New Antioch but sends reinforcements from time to time. After the Shuttles come to take them to safety the contact with Mojo is lost. Artanis receives an encrypted transmission from Raynor who resides in Tetralon, a Dominion prison on Korhal IV. Raynor says there is a way to eradicate all Zerg on Shakuras once again. He says that he needs to steal some Confederate Psi Disrupters from a base on a space platform near Korhal IV in order to create a vast psi-wave to destroy the Zerg. Artanis and Fenidus jump into hyperspace with the command ship Chronus and save Raynor from the prison on Korhal IV. The targeted space platform is filled with Zerg which are being massively killed by an Ion Cannon and at some point it overloads and self-destructs. After they free the way, they get Jimmy in the base and he gets the 3 Psi Disrupters so the Protoss can teleport them on their ship. Raynor didn't have a chance to get out and was captured by Zerg. From down there transmissions were impossible to direct. The Protoss return to Shakuras where Mojo has amassed a large army to fight against them. Mojo occupied the Citadel and other Protoss say they saw him in Zerg territory. The only way to evade the new Council's sentence is to fight against them, Mojo implied. His troops attack the heroes' base but they are saved by the new Council's reinforcements who come through a in-base Warp Gate. Our heroes defeat Mojo' troops and suddenly Zerg Guardians come and annihilate him. Before Protoss set the Psi Disrupters up Artanis suggests they should eliminate the Xregling (Hybrid) Chrysalis on Tarsonis. Fenidus tells Artanis that it's breaking Protoss law to attack unborn creatures but and exception will be made in this case. Fenidus remains to defend New Antioch. Tarsonis is the lead place for the Swarm now and the cocoons must be destroyed in a blitz war. Meanwhile New Antioch is overrun by the Zerg and Fenidus dies, his body being brought to the Citadel. Artanis decides to set up the Psi Disrupters in order to make the Zerg attack each other. Raynor comes in and explains that he felt like he was in a wet place and suddenly woke up on a Dominion flagship. They go to Shakuras plant and activate the Psi Disrupters using an abandoned Xel'Naga Shrine which contained a huge crystal that could spread the psi-waves throughout all of Shakuras. Most Zerg die and the rest crumble under Artanis' eyes whom now resides in the Citadel. The episode ends with Raynor going after Duran.

Episode IX: Terran

James Raynor continues to pursue Duran to the darkest moon of the Ravlon System, Raxid but realizes he needs more support. He "calls" one of his old friends Tom Kazansky who after the Confederacy riot went to Earth and did service there. Kazansky offers to help him and brings his fleet to the Koprulu Sector. Raynor waits for you to discuss the future objectives in the briefing room. You're being promoted to Captain. Jim says Tom's forces will enter Raxid's atmosphere in 34h and until then they need to liberate their location from Zerg. The planet used to be occupied by Terran until 12 years ago when an ice storm hit. Raynor starts feeling sick bu the Adjutant says she can't find any diseases in his organism and asks him to get tested in the lab. After the Terran clear the way, Duran appears to tell Raynor he's hatched out of a Chrysalis but he denies it. A Dominion fleet passes by Raxid and is spied on by the Adjutant's satellite. A wraith pilot scout saw Dominion heavy bombers.

Development

Development started in 1998 as "Project Genocide". The developers approached Vivendi Universal for permission to distribute by CD it in late 2000. Vivendi was not servicing the Hungarian market and would not allow HunCraft to be distributed as an authorized expansion; however, they permitted it to be distributed online free of charge.[1]
