- Daggoth sends Hunter Killers to aid Infested Kerrigan(src)
Hunter Killers are a special hydralisk strain. They are essentially double-powered Hydralisks, doing double damage and enjoying double the hit points, as well as having all hydralisk upgrades by default. They are usually tinted red in campaign missions.
History
Originally created and used exclusively by Daggoth of the Tiamat Brood, they protected Infested Kerrigan's chrysalis.[3] Daggoth sent a pair of Hunter Killers to escort Kerrigan when she invaded the Amerigo.[4]
The Brood War
Dark Vengeance
The dark archon Ulrezaj intended to use Hunter Killers in his attack on Shakuras. Using a technique to combine Dark Templar and zerg energy to create false, warped khaydarin crystals, he would control and summon hydralisks and zerglings from his base on Char and, using genetic stations on a space platform over Shakuras transform them into enhanced zerg with the false crystals. The technique rendered the Hunter Killers immune to the effects of the xel'naga temple.[5]
The plot was foiled by heroes dispatched by Zeratul's forces.[6][7]
The Queen of Blades
During the Brood War, Daggoth was a rival to Infested Kerrigan. However, Hunter Killers fell under Kerrigan's control on at least a few occasions.[8][9] Kerrigan used Arcturus Mengsk's psi emitters to control nearby directionless zerg, including the Hunter Killers, special Devouring One zerglings, and even a Torrasque ultralisk.[9]
Second Great War
Kerrigan still employed Hunter Killers. During the mission All In, whenever Kerrigan attacked the Terran base, she brought a bunch of Hunters as a personal escort.
Scenario Maps
StarCraft Fortress
Powerful hunter killers can be found in the RPG map StarCraft Fortress.[1]
Bunker Command II
Hunter Killers could be used as reinforcements by the terrans in Bunker Command II.[10]
Crazy Bob's Bazaar
Crazy Bob's Bazaar sells a slightly weaker version of the Hunter Killer to interested buyers. These Hunter Killers have slightly less armor, but are otherwise as dangerous as regular Hunter Killers.[2]
Twilight Struggle
Hunter Killers appear in Twilight Struggle. The yellow brood defends each cerebrate with four of them.[11]
Game Unit
StarCraft
Unlike the Devouring One and other specialized units, the Hunter Killer received a custom portrait.
StarCraft II
Hunter Killers appear in the Galaxy Map Editor. They are slightly bigger than hydralisks and have improved statistics. Other than that, the two are indistinguishable.
Unlike in the original StarCraft, Hunter Killers do not receive a custom portrait.
