- An immortal(src)

The immortal is a protoss cybernetic trooper.[2]

Overview

Immortal SC2 Cncpt1

Immortals in combat

Historically, crippled veteran templar could volunteer to continue serving by being transplanted into dragoon exoskeletons. This honored tradition was broken by the fall of Aiur when the shrine dedicated to dragoon creation was infested by the zerg. Following the Brood War, crippled templar were transplanted into the new immortal exoskeletons instead.[3] The first were in service by 2502.[4] The remaining dragoons were transformed into immortals as well.[2]

Immortals are outfitted with twin phase disruptors as their primary attack form; they give critical fire support to legions of zealots[2] against ground targets.[5] Their specially hardened energy shields only activate when struck by powerful attacks, which leaves them more vulnerable to the pinprick attacks of lesser foes.[6]

Game Unit

The immortal is a powerful unit when in a group and does well against the zerg's roachs and ultralisks. They also have a strong shield that defends from heavy attackers but stuggles against weaker units of the terran and zerg.

Hardened Shields

While the immortal has shields remaining, incoming attacks that would deal more than 10 damage have the damage reduced to 10. Damage reduction from shield upgrades is applied after the hardened shields reduction. Attacks lower than 10 damage are unaffected.

Damage from spells, including nuclear missiles and EMP shots, is unaffected.

This ability is removed in Legacy of the Void.

Herbie the Goldfish

As an Easter egg, the immortal's portrait occasionally shows a "goldfish", although currently it appears more often than it should. As a joke, Dustin Browder calls the fish "Herbie".[7]

On the highest graphic settings, the interface adds more lighting and reflection to the glass of the immortal's tank. Herbie and other elements, except for the protoss' head, are less visible.
