Overview

The Infestor

The Infestor is ground support unit which is capable of moving while burrowed and even using abilities from underground.[1]

Game Unit

Abilities

  • Burrow
Main article: Burrow
    • Like many ground units, the Infestor can burrow. However, the Infestor can move while burrowed.[2] It cannot attack[3] enabling it to travel underneath defensive structures and attack from within a base.[3][4]

Researched Abilities

These abilities and upgrades are researched at the Infestor Pit.[5]

Fungal Scourge[6]

This ability infests a single non-massive unit, causing it to take damage until it dies explosively (causing splash damage to nearby units).[1][7]

This ability has been removed as of April 2009.[8]

Neural Parasite

The infestor takes control of target enemy unit. Heroic units are immune.

Units maintain their upgrades and special abilities while controlled. Control reverts to the original player if the infestor is killed, when duration ends, or when the range between the infestor and the controlled unit grows too large.

Controlled probes and SCVs can build structures; the SCV will leave a structure unfinished if it reverts during the construction. Affected drones cannot mutate structures. Larva can be morphed, but hatched units return to enemy's control once the effect has worn off.

Affected units cannot be loaded into transports, and ability cannot be used on transports carrying units. Affected units can be recalled by a Nexus or Mothership.

Ability can be used on enemy infestors. Units mind controlled by affected infestors remain under player's control for normal duration, even after affected infestors revert to opponent's control. Heroic units (such as motherships) cannot be controlled.

This ability can be used while burrowed.

Development

The infestor is set to undergo a major art change.[12]

The Infestor used to be able to infest protoss structures, which would spawn infested protoss,[13] but that ability has been removed from the latest build of StarCraft II.[14]

The infestor later lost its ability to infest terran structures as well.[1]

This ability was removed by October 2008.[1]

    • This ability was automatically researched.[15]
    • Dark Swarm worked similarly to the defiler's version, creating a smokescreen for units to hide under, protecting them from ranged attacks.[3][16][17][18]
    • Dark Swarm protected units from a ghost's Snipe attack as well.[19]
    • A Roach's attacks were unaffected by Dark Swarm.[20]

The infestor used to have these abilities as well.

Disease

Enables infestors to use Disease. This area-of-effect attack reduces an opponent's hit points by 95% in ten seconds.[21]

  8. Already mentioned by a few, but M&Ms are very susceptible to any AoE type abilities/attacks. For example, they fall quickly to Banelings (if they get close enough, usually using burrow), Psi Storm, Colossi, Siege Tanks, and Disease (does 100 damage to units in an area but will not kill the unit - replacing fungal infestation). 2009-04-28.
