The ionic force field is a terran shielding technology developed for cybernetic infantry (and later standard frontline soldiers), designed to reduce incoming damage using ionized gas, akin to the protoss plasma shield but without the psi-field generator. It was first designed by Egon Stetmann, but after he destroyed his prototype[1] it was replicated in a science facility on Vardona, whose scientists had spent some time on the project when the Tal'darim attacked one of the planet's cities.[2]

Stetmann designed the first prototype with scientist Isabella Yorin for a Dominion military cyborg program, however, after he learned that their testing was being forcefully done on inmates of New Folsom Prison, Stetmann sabotaged the project and destroyed his prototype[1]. During the Defenders of Man Insurgency, the design was replicated and redesigned for more humane deployment and operation at the Ryno D science facility, and removed the need for integration with a cybernetic body.[3]

Game Effect[]

The ionic force field is a choice for Nova's gadget slot in Nova Covert Ops unlocked after saving the science facility in the mission "Dark Skies"[2]. Defenders of Man ghost units have their own ionic force field ability, which lasts longer but absorbs less damage.
