James Phinney is a former member of Blizzard Entertainment.
Biography[]
Phinney was the lead designer of Shattered Nations; a turn-based strategy game in the style of Civilization. The project was cancelled, in part because Phinney was unable to convince Allen Adham of the project's viability, in part because Adham hoped to make a Star Wars-licensed game. However, the Star Wars deal fell through, and Phinney was made lead designer of StarCraft.[1][2] He developed much of the game's story alongside Chris Metzen.[3]
Phinney left Blizzard in the summer of 1998 alongside Jesse McReynolds, stating they wanted to start something new. They took nearly a dozen Blizzard staff with them, including Eric Flannum, Justin Thavirat, Robert Djordjevich, and artist Maxx Marshall. Phinney and co. set up Fugitive Studios. Fugitive dissolved after less than a year due to various issues, causing some of Fugitive's employees to return to Blizzard.[1]
