Sykes spent his younger years running with a dedicated merc band, where he befriended Rob "Cannonball" Boswell and Elms in particular. Elms went her own way, with Sykes saying he "owed" her a great deal. Sykes continues to rely on Cannonball's help for all of his biggest jobs. His time as a mercenary has seen him through a few good times, and a whole lot of bad.[1]
Altered Timelines[]

During or after the End War, Sykes lost his left eye. He had it replaced with an ocular implant.
After the Battle of Adena, Sykes ran with a new mercenary crew who operated out of the outpost of Last Junction. He was visited again by Elms, who offered to sell him jorium. However, Sykes double crossed Elms to steal her jorium haul, and had his mercenaries cohorts surround Elm's dropship. Sykes shot Elms's companion Turan, and offered that if Elms did as he said, they'd both walk away rich. Elms managed to grab Sykes's gun with her robotic arm, blocking his shot, then choked him on the floor before breaking his neck.[2]
