Jun-Ho Yoo was the son of Evelyn Yoo.

Biography[]

Tartarus[]

"Mom's been giving me medicine. But can I tell you a secret? I don't think it's working. I'm not scared of dying. But I'm terrified of leaving my mom all alone. Have you ever lost someone you cared about?"

- Jun-Ho to Donny Vermillion(src)

Jun-Ho lived on the planet Tartarus while his mother, Dr. Evelyn Yoo, worked at the jorium refinery.[1] In reality, the facility was part of a revived Project Shadowblade.[2]

Sometime after the Battle of Adena,[1] the zerg in the facility broke out,[2] overrunning the facilities and killing almost all present. Evelyn and Jun-Ho held up in the refinery until food ran out, then were forced to venture out from the structure. At some point during the attack, Jun-Ho was infected by the hyperevolutionary virus, but Evelyn was able to find a serum that slowed the infestation.[1]

The Yoos encounter Donny Vermillion

A month after the zerg outbreak, Evelyn and Jun-Ho stumbled across Donny Vermillion, who had crashed on the surface following a lead on secret projects of the Arcturus Mengsk regime. Evelyn held him at gunpoint, and demanded he take her and Jun-Ho to a ship. Vermillion stated he had no ship, but she insisted he was lying. Their confrontation was interrupted by a hydralisk attack, and Vermillion pushed Evelyn out of the way to try and escape. The hydralisk pursued Vermillion however, and Evelyn was found by Reigel, who was there at the behest of renegade ghost agent Nova Terra. She brought Evelyn to Nova, who had rescued Vermillion, and Evelyn punched the Vermillion in the face for leaving her to die, while Jun-Ho glared at him.

Nova gave Jun-Ho food, and questioned Evelyn on the zerg attacks and the jorium refinery, and she brokered a deal with the doctor: if Evelyn helped her get to the jorium refinery, she would take her and her son offworld. Nova stated they would make for the refinery at the next dawn. However as they left, Jun-Ho noticed his mother uneasily staring at a sign on the back of a park bench, reading "silence is the price of freedom."[3]

The next morning, the group moved on the refinery, with Jun-Ho traveling with them. They entered the hole the zerg burst from, and discovered a training facility under the refinery. Due to Vermillion's blundering, a door was opened that released a zerg queen, who cut off their exit. Evelyn was reluctant to open the door behind them. but when she realized the danger Jun-Ho was in, she relented and allowed them to escape. Inside the room however was a number of spectres in pods.[1]

Nova and the group barricaded the doors from the queen while debating what to do with the spectres. Jun-Ho was confused by the anger toward the spectres, as to him they just looked human. A claw then broke through the door and grabbed Vermillion and Nova freed him with a blast of cryo-fluid. Riegel then hacked the planet’s security systems and called for the Griffin to evacuate them, which led Vermillion to broadcast his findings out for his show. Jun-Ho snuck in during his broadcast, and was amused by the reporter’s antics.

Jun-Ho's advancing infestation

Vermillion began eavesdropping on Nova and Reigel debating over whether to kill or free the spectres, and Jun-Ho picked on the reporter for spying on them. He then noticed on the security screens that the queen was rallying the zerg for an attack, and warned his mom, who broke up Nova and Reigel fighting to warn them. Jun-Ho met with Donny, who was upset about his holocam that Nova destroyed for spying on her, when he revealed the extent of his infestation, and that he didn’t think the cure was working. He explained that he wasn't afraid to die, but was terrified of leaving his mother alone. Vermillion, remembering the death of his brother, revealed a trick he used whenever he got scared; counting from five down to two, but never going to one. Jun-Ho said the idea was dumb, but Vermillion responded "that's show biz."

As they began to leave, Nova ordered Reigel to kill the spectres, but Reigel defied her orders and sealed Jun-Ho, Evelyn and Nova in a room, releasing the spectres. Nova hacked the security systems and shouted at Reigel, who said he could not see her kill the spectres, but they proved to be loyal to their last orders from Arcturus Mengsk, and knocked Reigel out, kidnapping Vermillion and stealing the Griffin.

Jun-Ho calls out for his mother

Soon zerg flooded the facility, forcing the group to flee to the top. Evelyn, knowing they needed time, took a grenade and charged the zerg, telling Nova to save Jun-Ho. Jun-Ho cried out for his mother, but Nova carried him away as she fled with Reigel. The explosion killed Evelyn, but also took out a number of zerg, and sealed the path. As they reached the top of the refinery, the group realized they were surrounded. Nova, regretting having brought the Yoos with her into the facility, told Jun-Ho to take her hand, telling him that it would be over soon. However, a Daelaam void ray appeared, destroying the zerg and rescuing the group. This was commanded by Matriarch Vorazun, who wished to help them hunt the spectres.[2]

Last Days[]

"With all due respect, my concern right now is Jun-Ho. What have you done with him? He's just a kid—"
"The 'kid' is a danger to everyone on this ship. Whatever he was before, he is a creature of the swarm now, though we have yet to 'do' anything with him beyond attempt our own treatments. His fate should be left to us. You have my word it will be quick and painless—"
"Out of the question."

- Nova and Vorazun discuss Jun-Ho's fate(src)

Jun-Ho was taken aboard the void ray, but his condition continued to worsen over the nine days they hunted the spectres. The infestation began to consume him despite the protoss's own attempt at treatment, making him appear as a mindless zerg beast. He was kept in the void ray's med bay on a hover gurney, secured by force fields on his arms and legs. It was clear that the infection could be slowed, but not reversed. Vorazun wanted kill Jun-Ho as a mercy, but Nova and Reigel insisted that they keep trying to cure him, with Reigel working tirelessly to find some sort of cure.

Eventually, the group tracked down the spectres and prepared to engage them. As they made ready to leave, Jun-Ho broke out of the medical bay and managed to sneak aboard the warp prism transporting the group to the surface. Reigel later noticed, and was sent down to warn the outpost an infested was among them.

Jun-Ho, fully infested

Jun-Ho made it to the surface, and found Vermillion about to be executed by the spectres for accidently revealing their location. Jun-Ho, with his infested body, pounced on Six as he prepared to kill Vermillion, and Six slammed his knife into Jun-Ho’s chest. The spectres then decided to leave Vermillion and confront Nova. Vermillion comforted him in his last moments of life, and in his last moments, Jun-Ho mouthed the countdown from five to two, like Vermillion had taught him on Tartarus. He never made it to one, and when Jun-Ho took his last breath, he was smiling.

Legacy[]

Jun-Ho's death greatly affected Vermillion. He erected a wooden grave marker alongside one for his mother, before returning to Korhal. In his news segment, thinking of Jun-Ho caused him to take a more conciliatory approach; to present the heroism of those in the Dominion trying to make positive change.[2]

Notes[]

Jun-Ho maintaining free will after having cures applied to him in spite of his advanced infestation lines up with similar instances in Alexei Stukov and Morik, as well as (non-canonically) mutates from Alternity: StarCraft Edition, which similarly had protoss cures applied.
