Malmsteen was member of the United Earth Directorate's expeditionary force to the Koprulu sector during the Brood War. During the initial stages he served as part of the command staff of the DSS Aleksander. During a practical observation of the zerg in action against a terran colony, Malmsteen requested further orders from Admiral Gerard DuGalle, suggesting the ship intervene to prevent the colony from being overrun. However, DuGalle ordered the ship back into orbit instead, and Malmsteen obeyed.
