The various mercenaries of the campaign, to the left of their normal unit counterparts.

In the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty campaign, mercenaries are more powerful versions of basic units. Mercenary contracts may be purchased with credits from Graven Hill, a recruiter in Hyperion's cantina.[1] A mercenary unit may only be hired after its base unit is unlocked by playing the appropriate campaign mission. The War Pigs are the exception; they are hired free of charge after "Zero Hour".

During missions, a mercenary squad is trained at a merc compound. They have no build time, and arrive nearly instantly at the compound by drop pod. There is a short cooldown until the mercenary squad may be trained again. The squad size varies by the unit, and there is a limit to the number of squads that may be trained for each mercenary per mission. Mercenaries benefit from armory upgrades and laboratory research that benefit their base unit.[2]

Mercenaries have unique unit models—60% of the model is altered to ensure the models are unique, but still recognizable.[3]

Left 2 Die

In Left 2 Die, Raynor's Raiders can also hire Skibi's Angels (medics), Outback Hunters (hellions) and Death Heads (reapers).[4]

Heart of the Swarm

In the StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm campaign, Raynor continues to employ mercenary units. In the final mission, the War Pigs, Spartan Company, and the Siege Breakers, contribute to Raynor's allied offensive with Sarah Kerrigan. Mercenary units also appear in the employ of the Umojan Protectorate.

Legacy of the Void

In the epilogue of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, Raynor employs mercenaries units on his journey of the Void, along with the Daelaam and the Zerg Swarm, to kill Amon.

Nova Covert Ops

In StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops, the Umojan Protectorate hires some War Pigs on his expedition in Jarban Minor.

Notes

Mercenary unit models are recycled throughout the campaign for other units, usually when that unit is meant to be a stronger version of the base unit. For instance, the Jackson's Revenge model is reused as the Loki, and the War Pigs model is reused for the Umojan Marine. In the final mission of Heart of the Swarm, members of Mengsk's Elite Guard use mercenary models.

On higher level difficulties, some pre-placed enemy units will be replaced by their mercenary counterparts.

Data exists in the galaxy editor for hellion, reaper and medic mercenaries, but none appear in the campaign.
