A Tal'darim mothership.

"Weakness is a path to death."

- A Tal'darim mothership pilot(src)

The Tal'darim mothership is a unit available in the single-player campaign of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void and appears as a enemy in Nova Covert Ops. It is a variant of the mothership normally available to players in melee play.

Overview

"The Tal'darim motherships have warped in to strengthen our fleet, I must admit, they are quite impressive."

- Rohana(src)

The Tal'darim Alarak brought the Tal'darim's motherships to join the Daelaam after Alarak defeated Ma'lash in Rak'Shir to become the new Tal'darim Highlord. The motherships were recognized by Rohana as highly modified from the Daelaam's motherships, with a focus on the total destruction of the Tal'darim's enemies.[1]

During the Defenders of Man Insurgency, First Ascendant Ji'nara deployed a Tal'darim mothership against the Defenders of Man on Tyrador IX. She also warped in four shield projectors to protect it. However, Agent Nova Terra and her Covert Ops Crew were able to destroy the projectors. Enraged, Ji'nara sent the mothership against Nova's forces, but without its shields it was destroyed.[2]

Game Unit

Legacy of the Void

The mothership is the Tal'darim faction choice for the capital ship class in the Legacy of the Void campaign, and the third choice with the carrier and tempest. As in the multiplayer, only one mothership can be active at a time.

The mothership is a terrifically powerful offensive vessel; it can attack while moving and its base attack does very high damage, enough to kill many enemies in one shot. Its Black Hole ability functions differently from the normal mothership, keeping units on the map in a stunned state so they may still be attacked, and its Thermal Lance does 200 damage to all enemy ground units in a line leading away from the mothership. It also has access to Blink, which makes it easier to quickly engage enemies or retreat from battle.

The mothership is a very powerful weapon, but should be used in tandem with other units, as it is easily overwhelmed with superior numbers, especially air units which its Thermal Lance cannot damage. It also costs a significant investment of resources to deploy, but is substantially cheaper than a fleet of carriers or tempests.[1]

Nova Covert Ops

In Nova Covert Ops, an advanced version of the mothership serves as the final objective in Trouble in Paradise. Through the second phase of the mission, it will attack the Defenders of Man base as an invincible unit, but will stop once one of the four shield projectors are down until it fully charges. Once all four are down, it will attack the players base. This mothership has the same abilities as its Legacy of the Void counterpart, but with the added ability to launch interceptors, detect cloaked units and warp in ground units around it. A mixed force of marines and goliaths, with some marauders and siege tanks to focus warped in ground units, should be able to take it out. Nova can snipe the mothership from out of its detection range, and due to the slow speed of the mothership, can call down nuclear missiles on it if necessary.[2]
