The nydus pit was a zerg structure present during the StarCraft Beta, but cancelled before release.[1][2] It was responsible for unit upgrades, a function later taken by the evolution chamber.[3] The nydus pit then lent its name to another structure that was later renamed the "nydus tunnel"[4][5] and ultimately "nydus canal."[6]
The nydus pit's sprite was based on concept artwork of the nydus canal's interior, which served as the setting of the zerg's briefing room.[7][8][9] This sprite may have been modified into that of the sunken colony.
