The Observer is a Protoss detector unit, and, unlike the Terran and Zerg detector units, has no other abilities besides observation (like the gnomish flying machine from WarCraft II). Like the Dark Templar, it is always cloaked. Its speed can be increased by gravitic booster technology and its sight range by sensor array technology, both of which are researched in the Observatory.
Observers are used for a number of purposes. They often accompany Carrier fleets, and are also used on their own to spy on the enemy or with other units to detect spider mines and burrowed zerg units. However, they are very easy to kill, and should be kept away from enemy detector units if possible.
