The observer is not available during the campaign; detection is never required.

Co-op Missions[]

Artanis, Karax, and Fenix, are able to build observers in Co-op Missions. In Patch 3.1, Artanis's observers gained the Surveillance Mode ability.

Zeratul uses a variant of the observer called the Xel'naga watcher.

Development[]

The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft II which is no longer valid.

In a September 2008 build of StarCraft II, the observer did not require an observatory to build, making it available earlier in the tech tree than in StarCraft. It was upgraded at the null circuit.[1]

The observer's surveillance mode ability was introduced to offset how observers were often sent alongside the rest of a protoss army with the use of the "F2" command when the player wanted them to remain in place.[2]
