Operation Blind Devil (code: 2908DX9) was a Terran Dominion zerg research program, carried out during the Second Great War. It was administered by the Dominion Center for State Security.

History

The project was initiated in early 2505, during the Second Great War. The project's stated aim was to be able to control the Zerg Swarm. On Angra, DCSS operatives were able to procure a zergling that would be designated Subject 20983. Doctor Phillipa Broadhurst was chosen to lead the project, per her work on a similar, earlier project.

Phase I proceeded smoothly, as Broadhurst and her staff were able to replicate their work from their earlier project. Using burn-surgery, they were able to sever the subject's telepathic link from the Swarm, and while this resulted in disorientation and loss of motor-functions, the subject remained active. Having been fully severed, the scientists proceeded to the next step of removing the subject’s central nervous system and replacing it with a prototype control-spine device. As soon as they determined that the subject's body had not rejected the device, they resolved to move onto Phase II—programming the spine.

However, the project ran into problems, as it was discovered that the subject zergling was deviant;its brain activity was far more active than that of a regular zergling. Since the spine device had been designed with a zergling's standard brain in mind, this led to issues. The delay incured the ire from Broadhurst's DCSS contact and Nathan Lenski, their intermediary. Broadhurst stated that she'd either need another subject, or more time for her research. She was given two more weeks with her current subject.

Broadhurst spent two days with the subject, including direct contact (such as it was). She concluded that the zergling was sentient, and that unlike practically all zerg strains, the zergling could willfully choose the extent to which it engaged with the zerg hivemind. She advised that Operation Blind Devil continue with a second subject, while Subject 20983 be surrendered to her for further study. DCSS refused, and ordered that Blind Devil proceed with the current subject.

It was a decision that cost Broadhurst and her fellow researchers their lives, as the subject had only feigned allegiance until the right opportunity. It slaughtered Broadhurst and her fellow scientists before exiting the facility.

In the aftermath, communications transcripts between project members were classified, with various pieces of information (including the project head and location of the project) redacted from the transcripts.[1]
