Template:Unitbox Overlords are large flying bag-like Zerg. They are used by the Zerg as commanders, spotters and transports.

The extent of the Overlords’ control over the Zerg is unknown, but it is clear that these flying behemoths provide direction for the other Zerg breeds. They appear to relay orders from Cerebrates and may issue orders themselves. In game terms this is modelled by Overlords providing "Control".

Although they resemble the Portuguese man-o-war of Earth, they are fairly docile creatures that tend to young larvae and transport other Zerg across the depths of space by carrying them within their shelled bodies. Overlords travel very slowly and have no attack capability.

With the ability to transport, detect cloaked/burrowed units, fly and provide "supply" units for the Zerg, the flying Overlord is one of the most useful and versatile Zerg units. The key to winning most battles will lie in the utilization of every ability the Overlord has to offer. Once those abilities are mastered, the Zerg can truly become a race to be feared.

Upgrades

Ventral Sacs

This gives the Overlord the ability to transport units.

Antennae

This upgrades the Overlord's sight to 11.

Pneumatized Carapace

This upgrades the Overlord's speed.

Strategies

Overlords are very common units in a Zerg player's force. This makes it difficult for cloaked units to penetrate Zerg defenses, as compared to Terrans or Protoss, who require a high degree of "teching up" to produce Science Vessels or Observers. However, due to their slow speed, Overlords are quite vulnerable until upgraded.

One way Overlords can be used for offense is in combination with Infested Terrans. An Overlord can carry as many as eight Infested Terrans, and can go on "bombing runs" over an enemy base by dropping them as it flies. This has the capacity, if successful, to cause a surprising amount of damage.
