The physics lab is a terran support structure, an add-on to the science facility. Via a high-energy particle accelerator and a plethora of diagnostic equipment, it provides upgrades to the battlecruiser, and is an alternative to the covert ops.
The physics lab does not appear in StarCraft II, its role of providing support for battlecruisers having been taken by the fusion core and tech lab.
Early versions of the StarCraft manual state that the Apollo Reactor and Cloak upgrade for the wraith were to be researched at the physics lab rather than the control tower. This has been changed for later releases of the manual.[2]
