- Terran Dropship(src)

Template:Unitbox The Quantradyne APOD-33 Dropship originated as a necessity, "the Confederacy's proof to the stars that anything with a big enough engine could fly, no matter how badly."[1] With the expansion of the Terrans and their various governments to other worlds, some way of transporting troops from space to the surface of a planet was needed. Dropships are fully capable of both atmospheric and spaceflight. Early experiments featured Dropships equipped with weapon systems, although this was later scrapped in favour of greater troop carrying capacity. After the Brood War it was tested with air-to-ground ordanance systems, though was scrapped in favour of the Banshee.

The Dropship in StarCraft

Dropships provide the only means to transport Terran units across water and lava, thus they are often critical elements of an attacking force. Their relatively quick speed and 8-slot carrying capacity allows then to fit several units each; a fleet of dropships is often used to offload units directly on top of or near an enemy base; these "drops" are a key strategy for many Terran players.

The Dropship in StarCraft: Ghost

Dropships must land to release troops, as seen in several StarCraft: Ghost videos. Its in-game appearance however, appears to have been taken by the Grizzly.

The Dropship in StarCraft II

Dropships will appear in StarCraft II.

The Dropship touches down to unload units, behavior that was previously seen in the original StarCraft Alpha, but not the final edition.

An Assault Dropship confronts some Zerglings

Concept art for an 'Assault Dropship' for StarCraft: Ghost exists, along with a screenshot. This may possibly have been a conceptual design for the Grizzly. Alternatively, it is known that before the development of the Banshee, Dropships were tested with ordanance systems for air-to-ground combat.

Trivia

The Dropship is heavily modeled after the one found in Aliens. The Dropship's design, pilot, and quotes were all borrowed from the film.
