Reaver SC1 Art1

A reaver during the Great War

Reavers are heavy ground artillery, though are not artillery in the classic sense (of terran understanding) in that they don't lob unguided projectiles.[1] In fact, the reaver itself does not mount any weaponry, but instead houses a micro-manufacturing plant similar to the carrier, producing tiny robotic drones known as scarabs.[2] While the reaver looks ungainly, just one of these war constructs can level a colony in minutes.[1]

Tube-like protrusions are located on the sides of the reaver's head, giving the appearance of 'eyes'. These are used to help the reaver navigate.[3] Reavers are limited in mobility, and are often shuttled by protoss air units.[1]

History

"The reaver might have looked awkward, like a walking trilobite, but it could level an entire colony in minutes."

The reaver evolved from a civilian mobile manufacturing unit that was militarized[4] to become a mobile artillery piece, ensuring that fewer lives would be lost when assaulting enemy bases.[5] Somewhat fittingly, reavers are renowned for leveling entire colonies in moments.[2]

A reaver during the End War

Reavers fell into less use after the end of the Brood War, but remained part of the Daelaam's arsenal in clearing out zerg hive clusters.[6] A number of reavers came back into service during the End War when Phase-smith Karax developed automated scarab production based on Spear of Adun's star forge. [7] Reavers were also deployed against the Daelaam by Amon in defense of the psionic matrix, but were able to be reclaimed by Karax.[8] They were deployed by the corrupted Golden Armada against the Daelaam defending the xel'naga Keystone, but failed in their objective.[9]
