The reaver is a protoss mobile artillery unit.

The reaver evolved from a civilian mobile manufacturing unit that was militarized[1] to become a mobile artillery piece, ensuring that fewer lives would be lost when assaulting enemy bases.[2] Somewhat fittingly, reavers are renowned for leveling entire colonies in moments.[3]

The reaver itself does not mount any weaponry, but instead houses a micro-manufacturing plant similar to the carrier, producing tiny robotic drones known as scarabs.[3]

Reavers fell into disuse after the end of the Brood War, but began to come back into service during the End War when Phase-smith Karax developed automated scarab production based off of the Spear of Adun's star forge. [4] Reavers were also deployed against the Daelaam by Amon in defense of the psionic matrix, but were able to be reclaimed by Karax.[5]

Scarabs are small, highly explosive drones constructed and launched by reavers.[2] They are launched at enemy targets and installations in groups,[3] able to level enemy structures in moments.[2] Unlike interceptors however, Scarabs do not return to the reaver. Instead, they explode on impact, generating devastating electromagnetic fields that cause heavy damage to their targets.[3]

The reaver was called the trilobyte in early StarCraft alpha testing.[6]

StarCraft II

Legacy of the Void

Reavers are playable in the campaign of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void as a robotic siege unit, one of three options with the colossus and the wrathwalker. The reaver can now by set to auto-build scarabs and does not require minerals to build them. It is a slow unit compared to other units, but moves quite faster than in the original StarCraft. Due to the general improved AI of StarCraft II, reavers choose their shots better and their scarabs have better pathing, making them overall more effective.

Reavers are useful against clusters of enemy units that it can decimate with scarab shots. However, it lacks the cliffwalking of the colossus and wrathwalker, making it more difficult to position, and it moves and attacks slightly slower than the colossus. Compared to the colossus and the wrathwalker, the reaver fills a compromise between the colossus' splash damage and the wrathwalker's higher single-hit damage.

Co-op Missions

Artanis can build reavers in Co-op Missions once he reaches Level 5. They can be upgraded once he reaches Level 9.
