"I dunno man, space vampires are pretty wack."

- Chris Metzen paraphrasing Team 1's original reaction to the space vampire concept(src)

Space vampires are a species briefly featured in the development of StarCraft.

Also known as "vrykol,"[1] the space vampires have been describes as clan-based,[2] though were conceived by Chris Metzen as having dynasties or royal families. Some of them would be "mutated and monstrous," some would be "cool and sexy lords of the dark." Their civilization was at the mercy of their warring houses.[1]

Notes[]

  • The space vampires were originally part of a Blizzard game titled Bloodlines, taking place in a setting that involved robots, cyborgs, and the space vampires themselves. When Blizzard chose to focus on StarCraft, Chris Metzen (who'd been working on the game with Nick Carpenter) transferred some of his ideas from the game.[3] Members of Blizzard reacted negatively to the concept.[4] The space vampire concept was eventually dropped in favor of the zerg and protoss.[2]
  • 2-3 space vampire names are known from Bloodlines; Lon'Tiernan (who would be the main character, though it is unclear if he was a space vampire or not), Tichondrius, and Mal'Ganis. Tichondrius and Mal'Ganis would make their debut in Warcraft III as nathrezim, who were, as a whole, inspired by the space vampire idea, albeit applying it to a fantasy rather than sci-fi setting.[1]
