Spore plague (also known as spore blight) is a parasitic fungal infection found on Bhekar Ro, which infected the colony of Free Haven's mutated triticale-wheat. It appeared as a black smut on the kernels of the wheat. Hours after consuming the wheat, the victims writhe in agony before a a series of oozing, rounded mushrooms erupt from their bodies, which break down the victim's flesh.
When Free Haven was struck by the spore plague in 2498, seventeen families were claimed by the outbreak, including the parents of Octavia and Lars Bren. The infected homes and fields were summarily burned.[1]
