The stank is a variant strain of the ultralisk. During the Second Great War, a number of them were spawned on Meinhoff.[1]
This article or section contains information derived from Co-op Missions, and should not be considered part of the official StarCraft storyline.

Later, they appeared on a fringe Terran Dominion colony of Chazington, and allied commanders were called in to destroy them.[2]
Game Unit
Left 2 Die
The stank appears in the map Left 2 Die as a zerg NPC unit. It has a boss bar when appears. Every once in a while it will do an extra powerful attack that makes a small hole in the ground and damages everything around it. The hit points increase according to the selected difficulty (ranging from 2000 on casual to 5000 on brutal).[1]
On "Night 2 Die" mode, the stank gains hit points with each appearance.
It has its own portrait in the map editor but uses the ultralisk portrait in-game. A Stank portrait is available for completing the Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em achievement.[1]
Co-op Missions
Stanks appear as boss characters on the Dead of Night mission of Co-op Missions. They are boss infested, and have high hit points. Stanks are immune to the day time cycle of the map and deal heavy damage to structures.[2]
Achievements
On hard difficulty in "Left 2 Die," killing a stank with no losses for it yields an achievement.

Trivia
As Left 2 Die is based on Left 4 Dead, so too is the stank likely based on the Tank.
