"This place reminds me of home. A dead world, full of bad memories...and ghosts."

Tartarus is a secret Terran Dominion world on the fringes of Dominion Space, rumored to hold secrets from the reign of Arcturus Mengsk. It held the largest jorium stockpile in the Koprulu sector as well as spectres in stasis. It is defended by a network of defensive satellites.

History[]

"So this place we're headed..."
"Tartarus."
"Right, Tartarus. I didn't realize this tip would lead us halfway across the sector. What can you tell me about it?"

- Donny Vermillion and his pilot discussing the world(src)

During the reign of Emperor Arcturus Mengsk, Tartarus was a closely kept secret, and isolated, with propaganda telling members not to speak of their projects.[2] Members of the Universal News Network were forbidden from ever mentioning its existence. It was protected by a network of satellites, capable of firing lasers at enemy vessels.[1]

Infestation[]

"The zerg swept over everything. We didn't stand a chance. No one came to rescue us. As far as I know, we're the only ones left."

The ruins of Tartarus

Sometime around the Battle of Adena, the planet had an outbreak of zerg, which killed many of the inhabitants except for Dr. Evelyn Yoo and her son Jun-Ho Yoo. The planet's terran settlement was infested, and no relief was sent.[1]

A month later,[1] following a tip from a xenophobic transport pilot, Donny Vermillion set out to investigate Tartarus, but was launched in an escape pod toward the planet's surface when the pilot's ship was destroyed by Tartarus's still operational satellite defense grid. Meanwhile, Nova Terra and her Covert Ops Crew were setting out to search for the planet's jorium stockpile when they noticed Vermillion's escape pod.[2]

Nova and Vermillion landed on the planet, and met with Evelyn Yoo and Jun-Ho after defeating a hydralisk. Evelyn told Nova of the zerg attack and of the jorium, and Nova agreed to help her if she showed her where the jorium refinery was.[1] The group advanced on the refinery, but underneath found a training facility, and while blundering around Vermillion released a zerg queen from one of the rooms. The group escaped to a different chamber, only to discover spectres in pods.[3]

Nova, Evelyn and Riegel debated on what to do with the spectres as Reigel called down the Griffin, but soon the queen rallied zerg broods to attack the intruders. Nova ordered Reigel to kill the spectres, but Reigel refused, and instead released them. The spectres were however indoctrinated into serving Arcturus Mengsk, and turned on Reigel, knocking him out, kidnapping Donny Vermillion, and leaving the planet. Evelyn sacerficed herself to help buy time for the rest of the group, but as they got to the roof of the refinery, they found themselves surrounded. They were saved however when a void ray commanded by Matriarch Vorazun arrived and wiped out the attacking broods, allowing them to pursue the spectres.

After the spectres were hunted down and convinced to lay down their arms, the group returned to Tartarus briefly, giving Evelyn and Jun-Ho in small wooden graves.[4]

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, Tartarus was a deep abyss used to imprison the Titans.
  • The defense network satellites resemble the multiplayer select icon from StarCraft.
