Terrazine SC2 Game1

A canister of terrazine

"It's clearly related to vespene gas, but there are some very exotic organics added into the mix."
"Any guesses what it's used for?"
"Well it would definitely affect brain chemistry, so it could be used as some kind of a drug or stimulant I suppose."

- Dr. Ariel Hanson and Jim Raynor discussing terrazine(src)

Terrazine gas is a mysterious potent psionic reagent. It is sought by protoss, zerg and terrans alike.[1] The protoss consider it "the Breath of Creation".[2]

Terrazine is similar to vespene gas, and contains additional organic substances. It possesses mind-altering qualities.[3]

Sources are found on Mar Sara[4] as well as at shrines on Bel'shir.[5]

History

The refinery on Mar Sara

By 2503 the Terran Dominion had acquired and studied terrazine; scientists considered the side effects of terrazine enhancement to be "unpredictable".[6]

Terran Dominion Emperor Arcturus Mengsk and his new adviser, General Horace Warfield, have begun a secret project codenamed Shadow Blade. The program uses terrazine gas to alter the genetic makeup of ghosts. These ghosts are transformed into spectres – shadowy superhuman beings bent on executing the will of their "true master".[7]

Mar Sara featured a Dominion-operated "Vespene" Refinery 1138, a terrazine refinery on Mar Sara, disguised as a vespene refinery,[8] which was infested by zerg and had to be rescued by Nova (a ghost) and other Dominion forces.[9]

During the Second Great War, Gabriel Tosh commissioned Raynor's Raiders to steal terrazine from protoss shrines on Bel'shir. The shrines were guarded by the Tal'darim, who regarded the gas as a sacred gift from the xel'naga, and refused to give the terrans any. The Raiders took what they needed by force.[5]

Tosh intended to use the terrazine to create an army of spectres.[10]

Blizzard Entertainment stated that they are keen on exploring the idea of "this weird new substance" that could affect certain psychic abilities and the spectres[11]
