Thermal lances are a protoss weapon developed by the Protoss Empire for the colossus. They fire two superheated streams of plasma that incinerate groups of ground targets. These streams are targeted by an onboard AI, as well as gravity sensitive gyroscopes.
Due to the limited range of the lances, Khalaiphase-smiths built an extended thermal lance with enhanced airflow that could operate at higher temperatures, increasing beam velocity and effective range without sacrificing energy output[1]. Purifier colossi were equipped with enhanced thermal lances with powerful incendiary properties.[2]
Tal'darim motherships have an enhanced version of the thermal lance. Rather than a constant attack, these motherships use a wider lance that hit multiple targets in a line in front of the ship.[3]
The Spear of Adun was equipped with similar weaponry, the solar lance.
