"The thing that drew me to StarCraft was the combination of great storytelling and the strategic challenge of the campaigns. I started playing Blizzard games with Warcraft II, and it got me invested in RTS as a genre. When that first teaser movie for StarCraft came out, at the time, the quality was incredible. But also, this idea of storytelling in a sci-fi setting around real-time strategy. Only later did I come to appreciate the incredible skill involved in competitive play and the esports scene which continues to define StarCraft today."

Tim Morten is the former production director for StarCraft II[1], and the game's former lead producer.[2]

He left his position in late 2019.[3]

Biography[]

Morten's first Blizzard game was Warcraft II.[4] He later played the original StarCraft in his youth.[5]

Morten received his bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego. He began his career at Activision as an engineer and later as a producer and director where he worked on games including Return to Zork, the MechWarrior 2 series, and Heavy Gear. He then founded Savage Entertainment, serving as CEO and producer for various licensed titles and co-productions, including games based Transformers, Star Wars, Marvel, and He-Man.

He helped develop various training tools for the US Department of Defense, including Darwars: Ambush!, DARPA RealWorld, and Crises Simulator. Before joining Blizzard, he served as Director of Product Development on Command & Conquer.

Morten joined Blizzard Entertainment in 2014[6] and left the StarCraft II team in late 2019,[7] as it became clear that another RTS was unlikely due to the immense popularity of Overwatch and the development focus on Diablo IV.[8]

He later co-founded Frost Giant Studios.[9]
