Ultraling is a zerg late game strategy which uses a combination of ultralisks and zerglings.

This tactic uses a combination of zerglings and ultralisks with attack and movement speed upgrades. Preferably, weapons and armor upgrades are also done beforehand. If supported by the defiler's Dark Swarm ability, the tactic is very dangerous against protoss and terrans, but is generally not as effective against zerg.

Some examples of effective counters are attacks with large areas of effect, although if Dark Swarm is employed, this counter can be hindered. A Psionic Storm of a high templar and the Irradiate of a science vessel are good counters.

The purpose behind the ultraling tactic is to use the ultralisk to absorb large amounts of damage from enemy units, while the fragile but deadly adrenaline-boosted zerglings deal large amounts of damage. This tactic is effective because enemy units typically attack the ultralisks first.

Disadvantages

The disadvantageous aspect of this strategy is that the ultralisk/zergling combination does not allow for any retaliation to the air-to-ground attacks by the opponent. This renders the ultraling force extremely vulnerable to aerial attacks, which are often heavily employed by the time a large number of ultralisks can be produced by the player. Additionally, if the opponent is not a computer, or micromanages their units, they may target the weaker zerglings first, which would weaken the ultraling force overall. In addition, siege tanks in siege mode stationed in cliffs can deal immense damage before being attacked themselves on either the ultralisks or zerglings while protoss benefit from groups of reavers to take down plenty of zerglings and severely damaging the ultralisks before being destroyed themselves. Groups of firebats can also be used to counter the zerglings once the ultralisks are dealed by other units.
