The United Nations (UN) was founded on July 26, 1945, following the end of the World War II. Replacing its predecessor, the League of Nations which had failed to prevent a major war, the organization was designed to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights issues. It carried out its aims throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
By the 22nd century however, humanity was in a state of overpopulation, energy and social crisis, one which the UN apparently failed to control. By the early 23rd century it had become defunct, officially replaced by the more tyrannical United Powers League on November 22, 2229.
