An Untitled StarCraft game has been confirmed to be in development by Blizzard Entertainment.
Development[]

Development of the game began after the cancellation of Odyssey and Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. While most of the Odyssey team was laid off, a small handful remained and began "incubating" a StarCraft FPS under the leadership of Dan Hay.[1] The project had existed in some form before Hay took over.[2]
The existence of the game was revealed by games journalist Jason Schreier in September 2024, concerning his then-upcoming book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment.[1] Schreier noted that as of his writing of the book (which was set to be published the following month), the game was still in very early development, and doubted that it would be released, given Blizzard's prior attempts at creating StarCraft shooter games (i.e. StarCraft: Ghost and Ares), and that it was common for Blizzard to develop spin-off games in their IPs and never release them.[3]
Notes[]
While not confirmed to be the shooter game, prior to and after Schreier's reveal, various pieces of information have hinted at the existence of an FPS project within Blizzard. They are listed as follows:
- In April 2022, it was confirmed that Blizzard was working on an untitled FPS game, with development going back until at least 2019.[4] According to Nick Shpeshal of Xboxera, this game is a continuation of Ares.[5] However, it is not clear if this is Hay's project.
- In March 2024, two months after the announced cancellation of Odyssey, a number of positions were listed on Blizzard's jobs page for an upcoming game. While not confirmed to be Hay's project, the timing does fit the timeline laid out by Schreier. The positions stated that the project would involve the following:
- Multiplayer, mission-based gameplay
- Boss battles and "monster" enemies
- Multi-season story arcs, with an emphasis on characters, themes, and setting[6]
- In 2024, Blizzard employee Chris McCabe confirmed that he had worked on a AAA FPSRPG for Blizzard.[7] Schreier believes this is the same project as the shooter.[2]
- In November 2024, job postings on Blizzard's website indicated that Blizzard is working on an open-world FPS. Some have postulated this is the same project as the StarCraft FPS.[8]
- In the same month, an ESRB rating was leaked for a game simply named "StarCraft." The listing gave the game a Teen rating for "animated blood and gore" and "strong language."[9] The game's platform was listed simply as being "online."[10]
